hey guys i found a john deere 312 for sale. the guy says that everything worked great but the engine will no longer start and that it has no compression. he says that it has a new starter and all the bearings in the 42" deck are new. he is asking $275. my dad repairs small engines so the rebuild will be parts cost only.i would like to use it to mow my grass this summer and get a plow to plow my driveway next winter. do you think this would be a good deal? thanks |

The tractor alone is twice to three times that in parts alone. Its possible the previous owner does not know about the acr (automatic compression release) on these motors or perhaps it might have a broken rod (common) for these old tractors to have. If I found a 312 or any early 300 series jd for that price it would be on my trailer in a heartbeat |

The 312 is fairly rare. It was only made a few years. Buy it... |

Josh although he said it is a 42 inch deck JD never made that size. The decks available were a Model 41 (38" cut) and a Model 48 (46" cut). Roger |

Josh, I've got a 312 that I'm rebuilding - it's in a million pieces. It was given to me by a relative after not running for about 20 years. I just got through dismantling the mower deck & spindles in order to put in all new bearings. I agree with earlier posters - at $275, that 312 is a steal. I'd be happy to pay that just for the deck. I hope you get it. If you do, please post a photo. |

Could be a stuck exhaust valve or something with the ACR as was said. |

Go get the thing. If your dad is a small engine guy you have all the help you need. I know of more than a few cases of the ACR being the culprit of no compression and it's no usually a big deal to fix. |

Joshua, Good work on getting the 312. Thanks for the photos. It looks to be in very good condition. Once you deal with the engine, it should serve you very well. Deck looks great. It looks like you've got front hydraulics - I think this was an optional extra on the 312 (or added on later). It's something I'd like to add onto mine sometime. Let us know if you bump into any difficulties. |

Joshua Have you examined the crankshaft yet? It is common to have the cranks builtup and then ground back to spec. So dont think you have to find another one just in case you did not know. Looks like you got an excellent deal for the price. |

Joshua: By the way, welcome to the WFM! I think you'll find we can be a helpful group of people. Be careful on the 312/212 crank. I used a 312 crank in a K301 about 14 months ago for a manual PTO 112. I had to have the end of the crank shortened to work with the clutch assembly. The 212 crank snout may be a little too short to work with a 312 clutch. |

yea thanks for the input. it does seem that not very many kohlers have a crank that is 3 1/2 inches long. looks like i will probably send this one out to be ground.now that i have found someone to do it for a good price. thanks again |

If the crank ends up needing to go more than 0.010 under you can still use it. There is a Clevite bearing (#CB-278P) on the market that will work if you machine a Kohler rod big end to accept it, plus you get a more durable rod. These are available up to 0.030 under size. Brian Miller's web site details the parts and machining required. Just Google "Brian Miller" and "Kohler" in the same search. He has a ton of great Kohler info on his site. |
