I am going to be starting the restoration on my red 120 (probably not till spring) and I have a few questions: Where do you get the paint and what type of paint do you get? What do you do to the engine to make that look perfect? How do you make the hood look like new (as far as sanding it)? This is my first repaint job on a patio tractor and I want it to look perfect, any other advice? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi Shawn. Nice find there with your Patio 120. I would consider that to be one of the more hard to get Custom Color tractors. As for the paint. I'm going to be facing that dilemma as soon as I get my 110 Custom Color sand blasted. It's already disassembled. I'm not sure what's the best or what's official but I can tell you what I've decided to use. It's just one option that's out there so keep in mind that opinions will differ. PPG paint codes included. * Dogwood White: YS389G - Chroma Color * April Yellow: YS901GM - Chroma color * Patio Red: RS903A - Centari * Sunset Orange: 60659A - Centari * Spruce Blue: 4908A - Centari I've got a document with snippets of info and archived e-mails in it with more options but the PPG stuff above is what I'm going with. I did find a powder coater locally to me here in Northern KY that will color match any PPG paint code. I'm posting this information in the hopes that someone who has completed their patio/Custom Color tractor will chime in and add their experiences. Rick |

Oh, I fwiw, I don't have a good option on how to handle buffing the red hood. Personally I would consider sanding it with a very high number wet-sanding paper. Just enough to give the surface a consistent color and sheen. Then buff with a buffer or polishing compound. If that's not satisfactory, clearcoat may be an option at that point. If the hood needs some repair and you can't find a shop to fix it that will color matched resin, then you're kinda stuck painting it anyway. There are some sharp folks here at WFM and there are many experienced painters and fiberglass folks. |

The hood doesn't really need any repairs because the tractor was actually repainted a few years ago and they fixed that. The problem is, they used just regular red paint from the hardware. The only problems I really have with the hood is that when they fixed it up, they fiberglassed over the mounting holes- any ideas on how to fix that? Where do you plan to buy that paint Rick? |

Good question about the mounting holes. I don't know a slick way of finding them and re-drilling. The hood for my tractor is missing the right side mounting holes altogether. That whole portion of the hood is gone. I was going to make a template from the left side and re-drill once I get those parts of the hood re-created. As for the paint, I will be buying the PPG paint from our local paint supply store. In my case it's KOI aka Kentucky Motor Service. They have a dedicated paint department at one of their locations. I called them last month and asked if they could get the YS389G white. It's not actually called Dogwood white in PPG terms but they can get it non the less. I was told at the time that number is a base-coat/clear-coat system. If I wanted just straight one-stage paint, I needed to ask for YS389. I'll find out more when I actually get to that point. |

Rick, I used PPG on my orange 112. It looks great but it will run easier than Deere green or yellow. My father in law painted mine and it has not been picked up yet. I am going tomorrow to pick up some interior dye at my local PPG dealer. They also will mix the dye for the seat if you need it.
I live in southern KY. Joe |

Thanks for posting Joe. Your project looks great. Please post pics when you pick it up. Thanks for the input on the PPG white. About your seat, did you use the PPG paint code for the hood to get the dye made for your seat? |

hey guys. i gave the paint code i found on WFM to my friend, he took the code to napa, and they matched it perfectly for him. the hood turned out very well. we also made the hood shine nicely with some wet sanding , and then i polished it by hand a few weeks later. unfortunately thats all i have done in over a year with it... Rick, no the dealer said his computer was not set up to create a dye color based on the paint number. I had to carry a sample of the paint to them. My seat was too torn to repair, I restored the pan and bought a old faded yellow seat to dye. I have more pics but I have to resize them to post here. Joe |

I never thought of going to napa for the paint, can they can go right off the code? I tried one place and they said that they had to have a sample to go off to mix it. |

Shawn and all, For drilling the holes for the hood. The decals have the bolt holes punched out,you could apply the decals first and drill the holes later. |

Joe, I am beginning work on my red/white 110 and I have a few questions for you. What does PPG stand for and do you know what dealers carry it? How do you dye a seat? Would I be better off taking it to an upholstery shop to get it done? ANy advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks, Wayne |

Wayne, I just bought a red seat from a guy who has quite a few red seats, if you are interested let me know. I am not affiliated with the guy but he seemed like a decent guy to deal with. |

PPG is, I believe, Pittsburg Plate Glass. They own the Dupont line that produces the Centari and ChromaColor names in the automotive paint industry. Many auto body paint supply stores carry PPG/Dupont products. An upholstery shop should be able to dye pretty much any vinyl seat. At one time, Mar-Hyde sold interior dyes in a spray can. |

Wayne, I think it is Pittsburgh Paint. The dye is sprayed like automotive paint via a spray gun. I opted to carry my seat to a upholstery shop, but it had a couple of minor tears. Joe |

Shawn, yes, but the tears were not major. You can still see the repair, it looks like a drop of paint is on the seat. |

Well, maybe they can fix my orange seat on the 112 (See picture above). It's really discolored and ripped a little but not horrible. I might have to take it in and see. It would be a lot cheaper that way than paying for a new one. |

Going to pick up my 112 Wednesday, all I will like being done is installing the heavy duty air cleaner and the narrow rims with tri ribs. I would take the seat and get it repaired, one from ebay will run you $400-$500 My original was in terrible shape so I bought a old faded out yellow seat and installed it on my pan. A 1/2 pint of dye cost $20, they sprayed 4 coats on mine. Good luck however you decide to go. Joe |

I know, I just paid 550 for a new red seat for our 120. We are going to pick up our blue 112 this weekend, we already have a seat for that. |

Rick and Shawn, As I mentioned above the hood decals have the bolt holes punched in them, after they are put on just x the holes with a marker.Start with a smaller drill bit and work up to the hole size needed, let the drill do the work. The decals each come in a small box and are rolled up.My oldest son and I put the decals on,started on the end with the bolt holes,I held the decal in line and pulled the backing off, while he pushed it down on the hood and smoothed it out.No solution sprayer was used. Also had it on a saw horse when doing this, its not a patio but here is a pic.

Joe, I contacted a number of auto upholstery shops in the area, and nobody wanted to dye my seat. The one who said that they would try it quoted me 1.5-2 hours at $95 per hour plus dye and mixing, etc... Any ideas about how to approach these guys? Wayne |

If your seat does not need repair, then contact regular body shops. Anyone who has a spray gun can shoot the dye. I would show up with the seat cushion/cover removed from the pan and have dye and activator in hand. I will look and post the activator info later. Joe |
