I found an '81 317 (c317k160xxxM) in my area for sale. It has a 48" deck. Does the 33 tiller off my 140 fit this tractor with the same hookup, lift rod, and PTO..or does the 317 use a different setup?

It has an Onan P218G, instead of the K17...opinions on that engine?

Tony,

I had a 317 with that P218 engine for a time -- they were used by the Deere dealerships to 'repower' the 317 tractors under warranty when the Kohler twin failed. The PC1698 parts catalog has a section (#22) that is dedicated to showing the parts needed for this swap...

It is a good engine and works well in the 317. The only reason I don't still have that tractor is that through various "deere-trading" I now have two 322 tractors and a 318. The 318 has that same P218 version of the Onan in it and I am quite happy with how it runs also.

Any idea on how many hours are on the engine in the 317 you are considering? These Onans last quite a while (1500 hours +) without any internal work such as rings, etc. if properly maintained, so try to get some sense of how the prior owner has treated it in terms of scheduled maintenance, etc. Like all air cooled engines it is important to keep the fins clean, so look for any build-up of grass or debris caked onto the motor due to oil spills, etc...

Chuck

PS The 33 tiller is also used on the 317 tractors -- but the lift rod may be a bit different and the PTO shaft is like the later 140 version but not the early one, IIRC...

Here is a picture of the 33 tiller on a 317.
