Friday was a productive day in the garage. Here are a couple of shots of my 318. Re-power, re-wire and re-painting.

Re-power with rebuilt drive shaft is pretty much done. The "new" wiring harness is in there too.

re-power under way

parts after blasting
The parts pile after some sand blasting. Hindsight being 20/20, I wish I had done the blasting myself. Everything had to be sanded with a fine paper due to the rough finish. The abrasive was a little too aggressive.

Paint in progess

Things are now turning green! The fender pan needs to be flipped over and the bottom painted.

The rest of the sand blasted parts are now green as well after priming of course. Sanding of the first coat will start soon. I have a whole week of vacation to finish this project. I hope to having a working tractor by next Friday.

Lots and lots of parts still on the shelf to install.

I made a little more progress today...first coat on the hood and the bottom of the fender pan..
The hood turned out pretty good in spite of the hard use prior to it arriving in my garage..

John,
You said "first coat on the hood and the bottom of the fender pan".
All the paint I know must be done within 20 to 30 minutes between coat, or wait few weeks even month before a new coat.
What kind of paint you are using?

Andre,

I am using the Valspar restoration series JD Green.
The "next one" will get the real JD Paint.

I did coat everything 3 or even 4 times after waiting for it to dry just a bit..is that what they call flash over?. It covered well, but I would like to hit it with a light sand to smooth out any imperfections and then hit it for another round of coats with hardener for a good glassy finish.

According the the directions, re-coat before 2 hours or wait 48 hours...with cure time of 14 to 21 days after that.

It is supposed to be 96 degrees F here tomorrow so it will be a little too warm to paint. It is supposed to cool off by Thursday or Friday.

John,
I alway's put 3 coat non stop.
Last time I used the JD paint with the Valspar Renew hardener with very good result, very glossy.
For the JD paint, the re-coat delay is before 30 minutes or after 36 hour.
The hardener need 20 minutes to set.
Then I had 10 minutes to prepare the next batch.

Next time if I'm not happy after the second coat, I'll wait and fix any imperfection before the last one.

I have only one concern, this 36 hours is on the paint can.
This delay is probably different with the hardener but they don't give this information.

I didn't read carefully and didn't saw the 36 hours.

Thank's to open my eyes on that one!

Andre

getting close to done

Spraying this thing with a gun turned into a mess. I was almost done with the second set of coats and the gun broke. After taking time to clean the gun, it still would not lay down paint. The volume of paint coming out of the gun was not enough to get a good finish.

A new gun and 30 minutes of setting it up and the job was finished. I am not happy with it, but from 10 feet away, it looks good.

Next time..rattle can JD paint!

Tail lights, head lights and of course, reinstalling the seat and I am just about done.
