I finally found a 318 after months of looking. It's an 84 that the PO started a restore on and decided to unload it, the b43 is apart, owner said it was smoking. Only good thing on that deal is he sprayed it all down with some protectant. I'm taking the onan to a buddy that rebuilds a/c compressors and we're going to measure the internals to see if it's worth messing with the existing motor or go for a re power.
I've got some play on the front axle when i roll either tire and it looks like the axle rolls some, as well as twists in the horizontal axis. I'm thinking maybe a worn pivot bolt or is this normal?
Heres a link to a short vid of what I'm trying to describe: zhttp://s457.photobucket.com/albums/qq296/Wraytex/?action=view&current=98fb6726.mp4

The other concern I have is the rear end is leaking at the bottom near the front where it was apart once upon a time. I'd like to replace a gasket or whatever needs doing, they used red rtv silicone to put it back together before.

One other thing, the inner hydraulic lever is very stiff, I sprayed the snot out of it with pb blaster and worked it till it does move, but it is still sticky, how hard is it to remove and service the valve assembly? Thanks, Tim.

Scratch the hydro lever, it was pretty well frozen at the block the lever goes through, the actual valve operation is smooth.

Tim:

I performed the repair on the front axle the you describe a week or so ago. The service manual had me remove the front axle, and then replaced the Center Pivot Pin and Pivot Bushings, as well as the four Spindle Bushings (upper and lower on the left and right side.) that job was not hard, and cost of parts from Deere was not too bad.

Are you sure the looseness is not a misadjusted stop? There is a bolt and lock nut on each side that traps the end of the axle into an area on the frame. Sometimes, the adjustment bolts just need to be turned out a little to take out the slop.

Kevin no I'm not sure, I have no idea how
Much slop there is supposed to be, to me there is a twisting action going on that I don't think it right. I think it should only roll along the axis of the pivot bolt.

Another follow up, I'm looking at a B&S 18hp vanguard that's currently in a gen set with a busted head unit. It's set up for electric or pull start... Can the pull end be removed and outfitted for a pto or does it have to be certain model of vanguard? Thanks, Tim

You can remove the pull start and put the proper drive shaft adaptor and screen on it for use in your 318. The PTO clutch will probably also line up and mount as well. Most of the Vanguards had multiple holes for mounting things.

The only thing I'd wonder is what kind of PTO stub it already has on it....some if not all the generator motors had a tapered shaft on the PTO side, where as I'm guessing we can only run a straight shaft in our tractors.

Nate after you posted that I looked up the parts manual for the generator and it does show a tapered shaft. What's the feasability of cutting the armature end off and cutting it
Down to the proper dimensions with a lathe?

Pretty good actually.

The 318 front PTO has a Honkin big hole for the shaft on the B43 and should be adaptable either as you mentioned or with a Taper adapter from a bearing house.

Thanks Eric, I'll call a few local shops and check on the adaptors.
