Leonard, Yes we have a garden tractor club here in Ottumwa. Classic Collectors is the name. We are tied in with the Poppin' Johnnies Tractor Club. Our next meeting will be a good one to come to. Everyone's to bring a "toy" that they want to show off. Our meeting will start at 7:00pm, Monday, January 18,2010 at Mowers and More, 804 South Madison Ave. Ottumwa. You will not find a better class of people than this group of tractor owners. There are over 100 members in the two clubs. Dues are $15 a year and we attend six to eight events a year. We are planning on having a Spring and Fall Plow Day every year. If it's something that you would like more info on, shoot me an email. paul_d@mchsi.com Here is a sample of the club decals we sell for $5 each to help support the Club. Paul

Those boys pretty much were just grinning all the way back to Iowa City....we didn't get to talk much because we were listening to the start of the game. Now we are on the hunt for the right parts for the tractors that we have so next time we can use our own stuff and hopefully let someone use our stuff for the first time!! |

Matt, That was Brent Cobler on the JD2950 that helped you load your tractor. He is the land owners younger brother. Dave, His name is Milton Gillihan. He was railroaded into being the Classic Collectors Club President this year. My question to you is, what was the boys chatter going home? Paul |

Field Notes: According to what I heard...... 1) Thanks to the family corporation who left us on their land when the Johnny Popper club went ahead and finished plowing the usual club ground set aside for the garden tractors last week......... 2) I was told there were 16 tractors running in the field at the height of the activity. I cannot validate this as it was reported to me by a Cub-guy,,,,,,,,,and you know how those Cub-guys lie..... 3) Names of participants and home towns/states were impossible to gather.......They pulled in and unloaded. They got in the dirt and PLOWED......When mostly everything got black----They loaded up and went home. 4) I do estimate there was in excess of 18 acres plowed,,,,,,We do not have a final picture of the day as we all GOT THE HECK out of there---when it started to rain. 5) I brought a bunch of RF parts and I want to thank everyone who purchased. I tried to make it a 1/2 price sale....and I appreciate you all buyin' and clearing a bit of space in my shed....Not quite enough for another tractor yet....Gettin' close though. 6) Final word on Matt's $XXX loader mounted on on a $150 112 round fender::::::::::Needs allot more weight in the rear end and that 112 needs a major attitude adjustment. |

A total and complete blast!!!!! Thank you to Paul and the 'Johnny Poppers" for gettin' it done! On a personal note----Thanks to the fella from South Dakota with the Case and Ed Hirchak-"Sears--All Sears--All the time" from St. Louis for coming.....(I am getting more and more addicted to that brand every day.......)
I can't blame anyone for not coming because of the weather. It was overcast and cold all day. When the last of us left the field---It started to rain......BUT IT GOT DONE. Thanks again to Paul for hosting even though most of his hair is pulled out from all of the delays........TA |

Some video of plowing the hard wet clay.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNSxz6rrRZQ My battery died and without we had to get cleaver for loading.. Then we flagged down a farmer on the highway.. I hate breaking down, but it wasn't so bad with a little help.. Got to love Iowa!
2950 w/ loader and below is the 1967 112h with loader.
I love how Tom took the time for a photo opt here Great fun! Glad I got to use this two week old loader.. The battery is now 100% charged and trailer is unloaded today. Thanks for the help guys! |

Because of reasons beyond my control. We are going to be plowing just north and east of the planned site. If driving in on HWY63 from the north or south, take EXIT 40 to HWY149. Turn NORTH at the exit. Go past the first house on the right!. Then turn EAST (RIGHT) at first crossroads on pavement,Highland Center RD (if you would turn left, you would go to the Ottumwa Airport). Head EAST about the lenght of three blocks and we will be plowing on the north side of the road. Paul |

I'll be there around 8 or so myself. Weather guessers are calling for a 30% chance of showers sometime in the day. I have been out of town (Ottumwa)this week. I have been told that part of the plow field we were going to plow has been plowed already by some farm tractors last weekend at Harvest Days. By the way. Their is a Kum&Go gas station 3 miles south of the plow field on HWY 149. Also, there is a McDonalds,Pizza Hut,Subway,Sirlion Stockade Steak House,Courtside Bar&Grill and a Hy Vee grocery store across the street from the Kum&Go. Paul |

Tom, Go ahead and bring those yellow bellies down. The green ones will show you how it is done. LOL. Looks like a slight chance of showers here Friday and Saturday. Around 20% or so. I'm still going to be at the field Sat morning just in case. But I will tell everyone to check the weather sites before traveling from out of state. Just a thought, I have NOT been in contact with Helen and Lyle Dumont at the DUMONT MUSEUM in Sigorney Ia. It will be about 20 miles NEof the new plow site. If YOU would like to see their fabulous museum, CONTACT THEM NOW TO LET THEM KNOW. You don't want to miss it! Paul |

Because of the trouble with the water table next to the Des Moines River, David Cobler 15567 HWY 149, Ottumwa Ia has invited everyone wanting to plow this coming weekend (Nov 14th) to his farm to plow. The address shown is his home address, the farm ground to be plowed is south of his home at the NE corner of the intersection of four lane Hwys 149 and 63 north of Ottumwa about 2 miles. They are calling for rain Monday and a slight chance of showers for Friday. If there is not much rain, this PD will go on. I personally was plowing on the property today with a few club members (around 8 acres) and it excellent black Iowa soil. The fields were bean fields but the corn fields have had a disc ran over them and are easy plowing to. We had a couple of 430's and a few small Cubs and everyone did ok in both types of fields. I used my double 10" bottoms plow and my Wizard 12" plow and both did a good job. If we run out of field at this property, we can cross the highway..........there must be 100 acres over their. I've been receiving quite a few phone calls and emails on this second attempt to have this Plow Day. So, I'll try to explain myself better here. If the weather stays dry and the water table in the river is down (plow field is next to the river), we will try to plow on (Saturday only)November 14. Their will be NO FOOD,BATHROOMS or INSURANCE. Just a place to drop a plow and play. The owner of the plow ground and I are going to talk Wednesday evening (Nov 11th)and I'll post then if it will be a go or not. If the water table from the Des Moines River is still high, then we will have water in the furrows we plow. So there will be no point in trying this Plow Day this fall. This PD will only be for garden tractors. Thanks to everyone for their patience, I'm just trying to make one last ditch effort to get this done this year. (David Bowers: Have you seen the priest??) Paul Tomorrow, Saturday,Nov 6th is going to be Poppin Johnnies Harvest Days two miles north of Ottumwa on HWY 149 and Hwy 63 intersection (David Cobler Farms). I was just told that garden tractors are welcomed to come plow at noon till dark. They will be harvesting the beans in the morning. Sorry for such a late notice, I'm just finding out about this myself.

I hear ya Rick. The first Monday evening of the month is when our club meets. There was so much discussion on this plow day topic that we thought we'd give it just one more try. The ground to be plowed is beside the Des Moines River. So when the Corp of Engineers decide to drain the pool from Lake Red Rock (upstream), it plays havoc on the soil conditions at the plow field. And I just finished putting the hard cab and front blade on the 322. Paul |

NOTICE Here's a plan we are working on. Since Mother Nature has not been cooperating very well(And to the best of my knowledge, David Bowers has not had his plow blessed by a priest),we are going to try to slip a few rounds of plowing this fall. IF we can get good weather the next week or so, The Classic Collectors Club is going to still try and have a plowing event in two weeks(Nov 14th).No bathrooms (besides the bushes),no food,no insurance, just 40 some acres to drop a plow and go. This will be a last minute decision made by the property owner around Wednesday or Thursday (Nov 11-12) and I will post here either way. But if by chance Mother Nature (and David's priest) can't come to terms with the rain. This PD will happen in the same fields in the Spring of 2010. Keep your fingers crossed...... Paul |

PLOW DAY CANCELED http://www.plowingexhibition.com/ October 29, 2009 We will NOT be having the Plowing Exhibition this weekend (October 31 and November 1) due to the rain and wet weather. The fields are not favorable for any activities. We will not have a Plowing Exhibition this year due to the weather and hope to have the event again next year. Thanks to everyone for your interest and hope that we will be able to resume our activities again next year. It's been raining so hard this morning that the Ottumwa city streets are flooded. It won't surprise me to hear that we have had 3 or 4 inches of rain this morning. It's really coming down! (Remember to send David Bowers a Thank You email. ) Paul |

I had a conversation with some Poppin Johnnies members that own the plow ground yesterday morning. Unless we have a 2 inch rain, this PD is going to happen this weekend. The garden tractors will start out at the SOUTH end of the field. I'll have the CLASSIC COLLECTORS banner out by the side of the field so you can see it when you drive up to the fields. As for the food. There will be chips, pop, other drinks and home made chilli at the plow site for sure. (Richard, It sounds like the club wives have the food issue pretty much covered. Thank you for your offer. If you still choose to bring something, you're more than welcomed to.) Paul |

WOOOOOO ----HOOOOOOO let's plow! Normally were pretty much froze up by now but Monday it was sunny and 55 degrees. Some years we already will have a permanent blanket of snow on the ground by now. But getting dark fast. We lose almost 6 minutes of daylight a day now. I don't remember recalling a year before this where we have swapped weather with you guys down there at this time of year. I hope all of you can get the weather you need and still make the PD work for you. I look forward to the pictures. |

Chris, I wouldn't be surprised if it was warmer where you're at. It's been in the 40's here lately with never-ending rain. Assuming it ever dries out enough here, we should be good through most of November. But if October is any indication, maybe we'll have an early freeze. Bill |

Yea, I guess your right Bill, I guess if the ground is not froze, no time better then to plow. I was just curious on how long on the average the ground stays un-froze down there. I would guess late November is the average yearly month that most things freeze up. Or is it later? |

What do you mean Chris, it's never to cold or dark to plow. But I suppose once the ground freezes that's pretty much it. Bill |

It's official, the plow day is moved to the rain date, weather permitting. From plowingexibition.com: October 14, 2009 We will NOT be able to have the Plowing Exhibition this weekend, October 17th and 18th due to the wet weather. We have been unable to get the crops out and have ground to work, as well as the ground being wet and muddy. We hope to be able to have the event October 24th and 25th weather permitting. |

Jim, I don't think there are any more "shows" this year. They sure are a great way to meet a lot of fellow WFM'ers. You should try it. Don't you worry, it will be filthy here in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully a PD that fellow WFM'ers can plow with it and I'll have the 44 loader back on it to clean out a few horse stalls. In the spring, the 48 tiller will be going at it. Paul |

NOTICE: www.plowingexhibition.com October 9, 2009 Due to the rain and wet conditions it is doubtful that the Plowing Exhibition will be held on October 17 or 18. At this time very little has been harvested and the weather forecast for next week does not look favorable to accomplish much field work. If things change for the better, it will be posted here if and/or when we are able to have the event. Paul |

Richard, I have received your emails. Thank you for the soup offering. I'm checking some things out with the Poppin Johnnies President to give you some answers. I haven't forgotten you. I'll be in touch. Bill, I went to the fields today and walked a bit. I'd say 2/3rds of the beans are out of the 1st 40 acre field and that's it. It's damp, but the sandy soil is draining well. The west side of the field is right against the Des Moines River so it doesn't have far to drain. So far, IT'S STILL A GO!!! PLOW DAY IS ON!! David, Come on down, we'll take care of you. Paul |

Posted on Wednesday, October 07, 2009 - 9:20 pm by Richard Clarke: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hey guys. I know you're coming close to town and I want to attend. I have a 112H and new into this. I want to come but not yet prepared to bring my 112. I'm going to restore it this winter. I'm looking for a buddy. Can I still come and if so will anyone out there let me play around a little with their JD and learn a little bit?? Thanks for letting me know in advance. Waukee Iowa Richard, You will be very welcomed to come take my 322 or 430 for some rounds. I personally have been off work all year from a back injury. So I won't be plowing (much). I know I'm going to be in great pain, but I have to at least get a few rounds in. Keep up on this thread. With the heavy rains being forcasted for the next couple of days, we'll be checking those fields daily. Matt, We are expecting 50 to 75 garden tractors. Paul |

There will be a few guys selling tractors and some parts. I'll have some front wheel weights, decks, blades, bar and turf tires, and misc stuff for sale on my trailer to sell. Don't worry about not having a tractor to plow with. I'll have a plow on my 430 and another on the 322. You are welcome to take a spin for a while. Paul |

For breakfast, we can meet in one of the parking lots and make a plan. Hope to see you all. I've been razing the big boys with their 4 and 5 bottom plows that we garden tractors are going to show them how it's done.....one row at a time. LOL! We have about 40 acres set aside for us for Saturday. But if we need to, we can cross the road and turn another 220 acres over. |

Plow field address to use is: 6132 Cliffland Rd. Ottumwa Iowa 52501. If anyone else would like to see the Dumont Museum in Sigourney Iowa Saturday afternoon(23 miles north of the plow site, PLEASE let me know A.S.A.P.). There will be a chili meal served by the wives of the Club Members......(and from what I hear - it's better than the plowing ;). ) Now for a weather/field update. We recieves 5 inches of rain this past weekend and are expecting another rain front to move in on Thursday. The beans are ready but have not been harvested because of the ground moisture. So baring any more rain storms, we are still on for the PD to be on the 17th of October. The Rain date will be on Oct 24th & 25th. Paul |

Paul, If possible I will be there! I just accepted a job for this fall driving semi trucks hauling corn and soybeans from the fields to the elevators for a neighbor, if I get my CDL! I have not driven a semi tractor for over 40 years but plan to start practicing the next day or two. I have passed all the screening and written tests and just have to take the walk around pre-trip inspection and driving skills test. P,S. Under edit... Well I passed the tests and now have my commercial driving license so it is kind of iffy whether I'll get to any plowdays this fall. But I'm getting my tractors and plows ready anyway just in case... |

I have had a lot of emails and phone calls on this Plow Day. It's still a GO. October 17th and 18th,2009. Both Saturday and Sunday plowing!!!. The plow fields are 3 miles south of Agency, Iowa on the Des Moines River bottom ground. Soil is a little sandy and will shine up your plow. Signs will be posted on Hwy 34 that runs just north of Agency. Ottumwa has too many motels to list. You are welcome to camp at the plow site if you like. Every make of tractor is welcomed. In addition to the Plow Day on Saturday Oct 17th, if enough people show interest, I will arrange for a group tour at the famous Dumont Musuem in Sigourney Iowa at a discounted rate of $7.00 a person from 3pm to 5pm. Sigourney is located about 25 miles Notheast of the plow field. http://www.dumontmuseum.com/ This museum has the famous Deere patio tractors, Red Cub Cadets, Yellow/White Cubs,Massey's,Olivers and many more items. You will not be disapointed. This is a must see for a garden tractor enthusiast. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO TOUR THE MUSEUM,PLEASE LET ME KNOW A.S.A.P. SO I CAN NOTIFY THE DUMONTS. paul_d@mchsi.com So far we have about 45 people interested in plowing. Vendors will be welcomed. Paul |

John, That would be where the back up field is located. The original plow field we want to use is south of Agency on the river bottom. Real easy plowing with a little sand in the mix. (Kind of like the soil in Montrose Mn.) Paul |

The Classic Collector Tractor Club will be hosting a Fall Plow Day October 17th,2009 (rain date October 24th) in the Ottumwa Iowa area. We have the choice of two fields to plow depending on plowing conditions so I can not be more specific on exact location at this time. Both properties are 80 acres or more. I'm just posting this earlier in the year in case people need to make plans. Too many hotels/motels in the area to list. Port-a-potty and food will be on grounds. Large Antique Tractors, Horse drawn plows will be plowing too. I'll keep ths thread updated and as the date gets closer I'll ask for a head count as to who might try to attend. Paul |
