Thanks for the replies on the snowblower problem. I will clean up the rust as good as I can and give these ideas a try, very much appreciated! I could have really used it today but instead just used the blade and it did a fine job. |

My other option is picking up a 420 loader for $2000(which I can) and look for a 420 tractor to fit the loader. Thanks..... |

I am thinking about buying a JD 445 with a #40 loader and 54" mower.It is a 1995 with 335 hours.What would be a fair price.He wants $7000 which I think is high....What is your opinion out there?Thanks...... |

Bob Carden, I have a 49 snowblower on a '75 300. I bolted heavy rubber on the flat middle section of the auger. That cured my clogging problem. I can now throw snow with one inch on the ground. Use the rubber to take up the gap between the mid section of the auger and the race that leads up to the chute. Good luck. Matt |

Bob Carden - "Clean up the rust" reasonably... Then get some PAM, even the cheap Walmart stuff works, and spray down the chute on the inside back and two sides. It really works!!! It even helps a little with the wet heavy stuff... Also make sure you have the tractor engine at W-O-T (Wide Open Throttle) and that you are going the appropriate speed, too fast will plug it up too. -Chris |

Bob, Clean the rust out of the shoot to start with and give it a coat of paint. Snow sticks to rust like glue. |

Hello All, I have an issue with my snowblower for my 318. It is an older #49 I think and it has been sitting for quite some time and it's kinda rusty (but not real bad)inside. The belt seems to be good and it appears to be mechanically sound and all but it just doesn't do a good job throwing snow. I have has some luck with it at times and other times it just plugs the shoot up and it's a pain in the rearend! I know these won't really work that good with a heavy wet snow but it seems like it should do better than it is. I just took it off and put the blade on. Any ideas other than tearing it apart and painting the inside. |

I have 26-12-12 rear tires on my 69 140 loader tractor but I think I raised the FD to give some clearance. I agree with Mike D. I'd worry about losing a finger or two with them that close. Jim, I like the current figuration you have the tractor in now.
Here's my first 140 in it's light duty settup. I run this one light, but sometimes wish I had more weight on it when pulling the 80 cart loaded heavily. Like this winter on ice trying to pull a big load of firewood. It would jjust sit there and spin. That green grass sure looks good now, all I've seen for over two months is white snow and ice! |

Here is something that may be of interest to some of you. Most splined hubs on the vintage JDs are prone to develop play on the shaft in time. Many have heard of the product line Permatex but may not know that they also make products to join loose fitting cylindrical joints. I have a 316 with loose hubs and it got me looking around on the Web and I ran across this site. I plan to give this product a try along with the set screw upgrade to the hubs. It seems to have general use for filling any type of loose fitting joint. I am generally skeptical about such "band-aid" type products but I have had good success with the thread locking products so this may have some value. If any of you have tried this product and found it worthless, I would like to know and I will just stick with the set screw approach. http://www.devcon.com/products/products.cfm?app=Prevent%2FProtect&subapp=Seal%20Pipes%20%26%20Fittings |

Greg, Mostly cleaning up the 18 year old gas that had settled in. LOL The PO must have parked it with a full tank of gas! Rebuilt the carb, fixed 4 wires where the mice thought it would be cool to chew on and adjusted the belts. Funny thing is, after all that was done, I turned the key, it rolled over 4 times and fired right off. Then the wife says, I want to take it for a ride, LOL |

Dale, It is an early 1965, and as noted at the bottom of this page I found it at a very small town on the Columbia River here in Oregon called interestingly enough Deer Island. It was one of those 'hidden items' on CL Lowell -- That's a great picture of the carts circled up, but you need Chief in the middle there chasing his tail... Chuck |

Thanks for all the ideas and great pictures on the topic of carts and wagons behind a round fender tractor!! It might be a while before I get to working on my 110, and longer still until there's a "fashion show" here to decide between my 80 cart and my 50 cart. Both will be used I am sure. Here are a couple more pictures of the 110 when I brought it home... Grill is good but the hood needs a little repair. What appears to be a very old re-paint is badly oxidized, so I may yet have to learn how to paint, even at my age!

Here is a picture of our 65' RF with an "8" cart. This cart almost looks too small for the 110 and was probably made for light duty on the 60 - 100 tractors. We still like it with the 110 though.

Pete, I've been watching for another Brinly planter so I could put two on a toolbar to do what I want. If you set the planters for 40" rows you will always get the room you need to run between them. Make your first pass, you get two single rows at 40". The outside row will have to remain as a single. Turn around and set over to get the spacing you want between paired rows and make another pass. That will give you a paired row and another single. Repeat across the field. You may end up with varying spacing in the paired rows but all your wide rows will be 40". The two outside rows will be singles. I planted paired rows last summer and the corn did as well in the paired rows as it did in "normal" rows. Doing it with a single row planter I did get a few wandering rows which got tilled under in places. |

Mike, That's what I'm shooting for. I want to get the wheels of the tractor inside the tractor's fender width. Alan, Great idea on planting two close rows, but I'm not sure I can make it work with the two row, three point planter I have for my 50 horse JD. I will try to set it up and give it a try. |

Pete, plant two rows 6-8" apart, then 40" between pairs. That gets your plant density very close to that of 30" rows and there's not a lot more hand work involved than single 40" rows. |

Chuck, I like the look of the 50 cart behind the RF than the 80 cart.. I guess the smaller tractor looks better to my eye with a smaller cart.. I guess thats why I chose the 30 cart behind my 1964 too.. Sounds like you got a nice package! Everyone loves a round fender!

Pete Anderson, here are pictures of my 212 that I used to have with a 31 tiller mounted. The tires were supposed to have been 23/10.5 X 12 Deestones. They actually measured out at about 9 inches, just a little wider than standard 23/8.5 x 12. The tiller and rear tire track were just about even and the setup worked well. The front tires and rims shown are the narrow rims that Deere made. The 200 series had 1 inch spindles and the narrow wheels are somewhat harder to find and a bit more expensive. The tire size is 4.00/4.80 X 8. Mike

Thanks Roger! Guess the 80 will be the best match. Might have to lay low a while prior to even considering yet another series of tractor just to match the "orphan" 50 cart due to storage/time/wife approval factor issues. Jim, I picked up a set of 80 decals from HAPCO when I first got the cart and noted at that time that they do not have a similar set for the 50 carts... Chuck |

I can't remember for sure off the top of my head. And ya it was a very sharp looking tractor. Here's another pic I have of it.

Todd, I like those tri ribs. I am going to a used garden tractor graveyard this week and will try to find at least the wheels. I wonder what the outside overall width is on the tractor front with these tires and wheels? Since my tiller is 30", I am trying to bring the tractor width back as close as possible to 30" so I can keep the corn rows as close to each other as possible and still get down between the rows with the tiller. I am shooting for a 40" corn row spacing. Thanks. |

Pete Anderson, When you say wheel barrow wheels, I assume you just want something narrower than the 16x6.5x8 that's on it. If that's the case, Deere made a narrow front rim, available for either a 3/4" or 1" spindle. I don't remember the exact tire size for them but I think it's either 3.50 or 4.00 x 8, and it's available as a tri rib so it will perform well in a garden. I've never owned a 200 series so I can't say for sure, but one of those two sizes should fit your 216. Hopefully someone who knows more than I do about the 200 series will chime in. Here's a picture of the front tires and rims I'm talking about.

Brandon, Forgot to mention that the Deere hunting occurred at Deer Island, Oregon -- seems appropriate enough! Tim, this is not a "downgrade" as I am not selling any of the 322 tractors...just filling in the herd a bit and trying something new to me. Here is a 'style' question: Will the round fender look better towing the 80 cart or the 50 cart?? My brass tag 80 cart is going to need a bit of work on the tailgate before I can get it painted, but the 50 just needs paint and decals (and where do you get the proper decals, anyway?) Chuck |
