Speaking of the solid yellow decal on the 200 series... where can you buy them? My 1977 214 has the wrong decal on it. Adam |

Mark, I have one of those defrost heaters, works ok to defrost but wont supply enough heat to keep you or your hands warm. I used it a few times and now it just sits on a shelf. Scott |

Mark, That defroster sucks up 13 amps of 12 volt power, or about 150% of what most of the tractors are designed to supply on a continuous basis. If you use it for very short durations and have a group 22 or larger battery in near new condition (i.e. not a 322/332 with a U1 size...) then you may get away with it. JMHO... Chuck |

Jim and Pete, I found a thread in the following forum that I would like to use: Weekend Freedom Machines » Restoration and Repair Forum » John Deere and Allied Attachments » JD planter row units I would like some input from the moderators. The planters will be mounted onto a 318. Spaced at around 30 inches on 4"x4" bar 48" wide. Rail openers instead of double disk openers. Planters will not use 3-point, instead I will attempt to use the same mounting scheme the 30" hydraulic tiller uses. The restoration will not include a complete new paint job but focus on what I am finding and I have some issues already. |

All 1975 to 1978 200s had a solid striped hood. This is my 1978 214 with a solid stripe. Sorry for the poor picture. The hoods are all the same so it is possible to put the wrong decal on the wrong hood. Roger

Gordon, the tag indicates something other than a 210. As far as I know, 200 series all started with a "C", then 200,210,212,etc., then a letter code to signify the year, then the serial number followed by an M (Horicon plant). The T0649 would suggest the tag is a 110, hydraulic lift, maybe?. A 200 series is quite difference in appearance than the 100 series. Got a picture? tommyhawk |

Gordon, I checked out the registry and the closest tractor I could find with a similar SN tag is this one owned by Lundell's. 110 1968 T0649 131869 K181 Kohler 8HP Green Hydraulic Jim Lundell & Sons That is the only other tractor registered with that t0649 Type Code. |

Mike, Go to the Model Info section and click on the 200 series. It will tell you the years of production for the various models. If I am not mistaken the 214 was one of the origional models. |

Mike 1979 was the first year for in JDs words the "strobe striped" hood decals. 1978 was the last year for the all yellow. That is why you never see an all yellow 216 decal as it first started production in 1979. Roger |

Hey everyone, I just brought home a JD 322, its the 4th JD I have owned now and this is the biggest. I can not believe the pristine condition it is in considering it seems to be over 20 years old from what I can tell. WHere can I find the serial number to register it here. The tag on the side says M00322X111030 but the site does not recognize that number. Thanks. |

I just noticed the double post, too late to delete it, darn it... This afternoon I was going to install a pair of front wheel weights on my 317 snow thrower tractor and discovered this. 3 front wheel weight types I have one pair of those on the left, and a mis-matched pair of those on the right. I wanted to use those without the notch since my valve stems are inside anyway, but the one on the right won't clear the metal hub cap on the 327. Anyone else have this problem? I wonder how I acquired a mis-matched pair? |

My guess John would be two to one for the 318. You need to remember the 420 cost a lot more money than than the 318. Without doing reach I would guess at least $1000 more. I worked for a JD dealer from 1975 to 1985 and suspect we were a fairly typical Consumer Products Dealer. In a one year period of time we would sell maybe 200 to 250 200 series tractors, maybe 50 to 75 300 series tractors and maybe 2 to 5 400 series tractors. Roger |

Thanks Roger for answering my question.Would you say there was a substantial amount of 318's made over the 420's as I see they were both made and discontinued around the same year. |

John Riggins I don't believe JD has ever published exact production numbers for any model of garden tractor. Some number guesses can be made if you look at serial number ranges which are published but most of the time not all serial numbers were used in a given year. having said that more 318s were built than 420s. Russ, On both those knobs you want to remove you'll find lock nuts just below the knob. Put a wrench that fits on the lock nut and loosen the lock nut while holding the knob with a big pair of pliers using a cloth to cover the knob so you don't scratch up the knob. Is that clear to you? Good luck. |

Seat is loose on that newly acquired 316. Looks like I need to take off the fender assembly. It looks like just 4 bolts, but how to I take off the knobs that go to the adjustments to raise/lower mower deck and the adjustment to allow rear wheels to "unlock" so I can push it? |

Wanted to change oil on my newly acquired 316 but couldn't find a drain plug or whether it took an oil filter. I was low on oil so I carefully filled via the dipstick tube. This morning I had a little puddle of oil on my garage floor which lead me to where I can drain the oil. |

Bradley, for the cost of a 3pt plow, one could buy a cheaper ($100-175) sleeve hitch plow and an "A" frame adaptor that can also be used as a suitcase weight holder if one was looking to acquire more stuff.. This would be helpful when you use a 49 blower. 54 blade ect... Last fall I ran a wizard plow on Paul Dyer's 430, and it did an amazing job compared to another setup w/o the wizard.. If I was going to buy a 3pt plow I'd spend the money and get one of them! Its sweet! |

Scott. YOu said all your new to you 318 does is click , when you try to start it. I've had that happen before , and come to find out that , the battery had a bad cell . It would click but didn't have the power to fully engage the starter. Just a thought , i'd sure try a fresh battery before u think worse. It's a god looking find congratulation's on it . Keith |

Thanks for the info Mike. I will keep looking for a used 3pt plow then. Seeing the cost of the 30" hydro, plus the fact that after the garden is planted the tiller is pretty much useless until fall because it is so wide, I want to just get a plow for spring and fall, a disk to chop up the clumps and a cultivator to help with weeds down the rows(at least till things get too tall, the 318 sure isn't a farmall cub in the ground clearance dept.) I figure I can get all those and a 3 pt for the same price as a nice hydro tiller. And have a bunch more fun too. |

Well we just brought home this John Deere 318 tonight. The original owner says he bought it in 1987 but still have to check the serial number. Looks to be in good shape both physically and mechnaicly. It was always stored indoors and well maintained by the previous owners. The only real issue we have found so far it that the starter only "clicks" everytime you hit the key. Its like it does not want to fly out. The odd time it will and when its running it runs great! Unsure as to what would be causing this right now; any ideas? I am going to post it over in the hydrostat forum. Scott

Paul those are the hydro unloader valves so you can push the tractor with the motor off. I suspect your problem stems from increasing the system pressure beyond which the valve is capable of holding. A new valve may hold the system pressure but is something you need to replace. Hydro parts and cheap are never two words that go together. Good luck with it. Roger |

Relief Valve question. I have a JD 316 Kohler with a front end loader. Today I increased the relief valve top-end pressure with the JD shim kit. However, I noticed that the relief valve with the little push button on the driver's side left weeped more than usual. Is this something that is normal and how can I fix it. I believe I saw a post somewhere on this site about someone locating a cheaper source for relief valves other than JD. Is there another way to repair it or do I need to replace it. Thanks. |

Bradly, Brinly did discontinue the 3 pt plows. Probably because adding a 3pt to a tractor is more complicated and costly than a sleeve hitch, so the volumes of new mowers with 3pts were much lower than sleeves. I would personally look for a used one. They have been making the white ones since the 70's and as long as its not super rusty, there is very little that can go wrong with them. Plowing is more of a maximum tillage for spring and fall, with a tiller you will break up the clumps and grind up organic matter better. I plow in the fall and spring, then till a few times in the spring after plowing. |

I am wanting to use my 318 for more than mowing and pushing dirt around and am checking into stuff to work a garden and like the thought of plowing rather than tilling.I have been wondering if anyone knows if Brinley has discontinued making 3 point plows? I went on their website and they still list the cultivator and disk as 3 pt. but the plow is only as sleeve hitch. I have a 318 and was hoping to stay with all 3 pt. for better control and also not need a sleeve adapter. I read somewhere that someone thought they dont make the plow in 3 pt. anymore. Why would they not make them in both still? Also if anyone is wanting to sell a 3pt cult. disk or plow in the Michigan area shoot me a line. thanks} |
