So the cap screw and washer are to hold down the spring...I got that ? There is no rubber grommet on top of the spring. The seat sits directly on the spring it self?????I just bought the tractor and was going over a few things yesterday and picked the seat up and this rubber grommet was sitting inside the spring.Did not know where it belonged.

John R,

The seat parts breakdown does not show that grommet, and my 322 did not have it (same seat mechanism as the 420 above SN 475,001...)

I don't think that rubber part belongs on the spring as you show in your pictures. Here is the detail from the JDParts page:

Scott,
I don't know of any other attachments that ran off that single pulley pto. Unless you make a custom rear attachment for it.

I went deer hunting today and two tractors followed me home. A 318 and a 212. The 318 currently isn't running but was running recently. The 212 doesn't have a motor. I got them for next to nothing. Will probably part them out. Let me know if anyone needs anything. I will post pics.

I finally got the check valves back in the 140 and got the tiller up and running for the first time!!! FUN! Will putting rear weights on the 140 help when tilling, or should I leave them off?

John AWESOME find! Way to keep those eyes peeled. I also forgot to ask... How do I level the deck on my 430? I think something has to be bent because I have adjusted the deck hangers so that when the deck is all the way down it is level. When I lift the deck it is lower on the right side (as you are sitting on the tractor) by at least 1". It was much worse than that but I adjusted the deck hangers all the way up on the right side and all the way down on the left?? what gives??? Adam

Did a little Deere hunting today and bagged a nice Buck. 1973 140 H-3.Here is what I spotted at 40 yards ,I was doing 60.

I turned around, pulled in the driveway and knocked on the door.Talked to a gentlemen that was the original owner ,made him an offer and he excepted. After I loaded it on my trailer, he told me it comes with a grader blade and asked if I would take that too,I said ,no problem!
Here are a few more pics I took when I got home.

The PO said there are many issues with the wiring but ran good before that.It has sat outside for over a year and will need a lot of work

Just finished cutting grass with my 430 for the first time. How warm should the gearbox on my 60" deck be? Seemed a little hot to me but I am used to a woods finish mower behind an 8N Ford that turns at 550rpm. I checked the fluid level before hand and it was full and clean. The tractor only has 650hrs. Found something interesting while shopping at Rural King today.
They now carry Amsoil.
Not all of it, but they have a few grades of motor oil. Still pretty expensive, but I know a few guys on here use it, maybe other stores will be carrying it soon?

Thought someone might like to know!

Thanks Paul for the info and pictures

Is the single pulley PTO good for anything other than the material collection system?

Scott
I had a material collection system that used a single pulley rear pto. The hydraulic tiller uses a double pulley rear pto or a mid mounted single pulley that mounts to the mower deck belt. The mechanical tiller and rear mower deck use the 2000 rpm gearbox pto. These are pics of the MCS

I think what Phil is talking about is the Glow Plug Module, which happens to be bad on my 332. The glow plugs on mine were wired to a momentary toggle switch by the previous owner. I am in need of this part too, if anyone knows where one my can be bought besides from John Deere. If not, I guess thats $60.00 I will have to spend

Mike,

The reason I ask is one of my 318's have a rear PTO with only one pulley. I can’t get pictures of it tonight, but wondered what good it is to have as I don’t have any attachments except the 30 tiller.

I don't know where else to ask this so, I'll ask again !

A question for the 420 owners ! If you have a rear PTO ,,looking at the back of the tractor, what direction does the PTO turn ?
I'm getting the pump for the sweepster that I bought and it was rear mounted on a 420. I need to know if I can belly mount it on my newer X series, or if I need to buy a different pump.
The 420 was a 2000 RPM rear PTO correct ?

On another note ! How much clearance do you have between the bottom of the blade and the ground with a center blade, when it is raised all the way up ?

Thank You !
Tom

John, Yes. They are a BM part number and you may have to talk to someone in sales not parts.
I'm sure someone will post the number. Make sure to get the ones that have the dimple on the inside to clear the axle nut.

Scott,

The rear 2000 RPM PTO has a gearbox, and a clutch made to match it.

There is a double pulley for one of the rear collection systems, and the 30 tiller with rear pump uses a double pulley, not sure if they are the same components. This clutch is not the same as the 2000 rpm pto one.

All right dumb question here…

Are there two different rear PTO clutch assemblies for the 318, one with two pulleys and another with only one?

What are they used for specifically? I am not talking about the 2000 RPM PTO, just the clutch/shaft/pulley ay. Could someone post pictures?

I had a few trees I needed to cut back from the road before they got any bigger. The log shown is oak, about 17' long X 12" diameter. Pulled it up a pretty steep hill with no problems! ~~ Lowell

Phil,

Are you talking about the relay that is for the fuel shutoff solenoid? I looked into it because I think mine is bad. Figured it was something special, but if its a standard bosch relay you should be able to get one for under $10.

If anyone else can shed some light please do. I went with a 330 cable shutoff since my tractor was missing the solenoid when I got it.

John, On my 44 loader and 420 the paint match is perfect and I assume Ag Green, and I know for a fact that neither has been repainted yet. They are both mid 80's. Actually the serial number on my loader is M00044X100038. I would think that would be a very early serial number.

JD 330 Relay? I need a Reinshagen DSC AK6550, 6012/12, PA6 12V relay for my 330. JD has it for over $60, but there must be a better source, especially if there's a problem that burns out the replacement..! Any ideas?

Stephen,I can definitely see a difference between the loader and the tractor. The loader is a lot darker green than the tractor. This is why I think it may be a classic green and not AG green, but I might be wrong until I get some AG green to compare.

John, the PO may well have used Classic Green to paint that loader. If I remember correctly, it was last used on the letter series big tractors. No lawn and garden products were painted Classic Green at the factory.

So yellow is agricultural yellow...Got it.
I am going to get some AG green which I do not have but did a test paint with classic green and seemed to match very close on the #44 loader.I wonder if that was the color green they used on that instead of the AG JD Green

John industrial yellow is the color of Cat tractors and is used only on weights for industrial equipment. Mowers and weights for L & G tractors are JD Yellow and I think there has only been one of those colors. Roger

FYI, the wood sides are completely unfinished will mold/mildew real fast if they get wet. May want to quickly put a coat of varnish on them to preserve.

I did not and mine are UGLY now, all black and moldy.

Your help would really be a great help so I can get the garden ready to plant. It is time for Peas and onions to go in the ground here in Northern Michigan.

Back on after a few days cooling off, after my CL upset. So I see I'm not the only one on here (John W. Smith's post on the 28th) that wanted the 318 package deal here in Indiana. The seller was right, ONE guy WAS upset, any of us would be, with a good package deal of items sold to the second to email/call. I don't believe the buyer is a WFM member, or he may be, and just staying quiet.

Oh well, I've got other things to do. Gotta rebuild the frame for the FEL on the 400, bought a 316 with two broken rods for two bills, and I broke my tiller mount for my 30 tiller on the 318. I think it's time for a 3 point hitch setup for such!

Thank You !
Tom

Thanks for the info Gary. Do you know if there is a separate hydraulic pump on that?

Neil just ask the dealer, he is the one that can answer all of your questions correctly. Roger

Sweet backhoe and that 420 is mint!

On the 332 hour meter. There is a relay or some control box that also controls the fuel shutoff solenoid that is linked to the hour meter. Mine is bad on my 332, and that is probably why the solenoid was replaced by a pull rod and the hour meter not working. I have a tiny tach on the dash and used a 330 pull cable for shutoff. Do wish it killed with the key though, but the cable was significantly cheaper and easier to install.

I forgot to ask: what is the model number for that blade so I can go ask the JD dealer tomorrow? I understand the blade fit a range of tractors including the 425 and 455.

Cheers,
Neil.

Hi all, I have a 430 with a Quick Hitch 47" snowblower. I wanted to know if I can still buy the Quick Hitch 54" blade new from JD, or if not, what the best option to get one is. Based on the 54" Quick Hitch blades I've seen, all I need is the blade and it looks like it will just drop straight on to my (non-angling) lift frame.
Cheers,
Neil.
