Loren,
The 140 and the early 300 series, i.e. 300, 312, 316K, 314 and the 317 used the same integral hitch. This hitch was also used on the SF 110s and 112s, and the 200 series. The gear drives used a different lift rod and had to have a rear lift installed. The 140 and the 317 share the hitch as well. The curved lift rods would work on both the 140 and 300 series, whereas the straight lift rod only works with the 140. The lift rod from the 317 will work on your 140s.

Donald Edwards,
Scott is right - your 110 is a 1969. BTW you're missing the last digit on the type code - it should be T064 and another digit, more than likely a "1".

Also, welcome to wfm. We're glad to have you here.

hey guys, quick question. I'm sure the answer is here somewhere, but i couldn't find it and i need to know before this deal falls through due to lack of info. I have 2 140's, a '69 and a '71, i am looking at a sleeve hitch off of a 317. I'm fairly certain it will bolt right on, but are the lift rods the same for both models? Just want to make sure it will all work before i spring for it. Thanks.

Has anyone on here attempted to swap a rearend with diff lock from a 420 into a 318? I just found such a machine on a popular auction site (not relisting on WFM). I thought it was pretty cool and well done. Hopefully, it belongs to someone on here who can share more about it. I have neither a 420 or A 318, but I found interesting.

Donald,

I would say it is a 1969 based on the S/N.

Just found this site, looks good. I just purchased a JD 110 square fender with Kohler K181S engine. The ID tag reads Type T064 Serial # 137513M. I'm getting conflicting info on year it was manufactured. Can someone assist?
Thanks in advance.

I am going to install a hydraulic system on my 200 series tractor. With the gallery down I can't get to the directions to help do the install. Can someone help me in obtaining a set of instructions. Thank you, Dave.

Roger H, - Thank you for the info on the draft plate. I researched a bit on Keeping it Green and I believe I bought the right one on ebay. I bought the two hangars that operate the lift also. Fortunately, the deck came with the two rear brackets. Other than a belt, I think I have all that I need to mow.

Peter, and Roger... Thanks for the updated parts info on my 46" deck. Fantastic information on the forum link, this is VERY good stuff to know.

I am going to tear the deck down this winter and rebuild the whole thing. I was extremely impressed with the deck rebuild on the archived forum link. I will save that link so that I can refer back to it when I do the rebuild.

I replaced the spindle bearings back in '95 or '96 so they have lasted 15 years. They are getting noisy now, and my linkages are getting sloppy as well. It's time to freshen up everything.

I'm sure that I will have more questions as I go through with the job, and it's nice to know there are others like me that have these old machines, and like to keep them going.

Thanks again, Greg

Greg the spindles on the bigger decks are the same as used on yours. For that matter they are the spindles used from 1964 up to ?? I know my 1973 70 uses the same spindles (2 instead of 3) and as did a 65 rider I used to own (1 instead of 3) as my 214. The rings when I have seen them used can just be bolted to the deck using the three original holes and then be welded in place by welding around the outer edge. The only thing this does is raise the spindle/blades less than 1/8 of an inch or the thickness of the decks metal. It also makes sure the spindles stay in the right place. JD wouldn't sell them if they didn't work. You can also look up JD parts yourself at www.jdparts.com. Roger

There is a good thread on deck repair which shows the reinforcement rings that you can get. See:

http://www.weekendfreedommachines.com/discus/messages/96042/105112.html

The rings go on the underside of the deck and do not require welding. They do not replace the sheet metal, but might help out if its rotted out.

I put them in on my deck which was in reasonable shape and it stiffens up the spindle mount areas. You will probably need longer carriage bolts, as the plates are about 1/8" thick. I think I ended up using 1-1/4" bolts for my 46" deck.

I called the local JD dealer here, and they priced the Subbed part number at $15.00 and called it a "ring", qty used (1). They also said that these were for 50" and 60" decks, which uses a different spindle assembly if I remember correctly.

Are these "rings" dished metal, and require cutting the existing dished metal spindle holders out of the deck?? Then re-welding in the replacement dished rings?? Is that how this works?? If so.... I think that I remember seeing a diagram of them on the 50" decks back in the late 90's.

How can I get a parts diagram of this from a competent John Deere Parts Department?? Does anyone know a..... GOOD..... parts person that I can talk to??

Thanks for you help, K

Thanks for the part number of the replacement "weld on" plate for my 46" Deck. Has anyone seen this done?? Does this replacement change the positions of the pulley's?? Or does everything still line up correctly and all tighteners and both belts stay in line and run true and straight?? as they should??

Thanks again for all help. K

Casey,

Any local small engine shop that is a Kohler dealer can fix you up with what you need. I do like to patronize my local guys first. Your John Deere dealer can also help. I've had good luck with Jacks Small Engines, just type 'em in your webbrowser and do a search. Their easy to find...

Do yourself a huge favor and go to the Kohler website and download the small K-Series Service manual PDF, it's free.

Good Luck with your rebuild!

(UNDER EDIT) Good Work Roger, I get distracted typing sometimes!

Casey go to your nearest small engine repair shop/JD dealer and they will be able to provide you with the rings you need. Three is the normal number for a K181. Roger

Dale you need to replace the original battery ignition switch that 140s came with. You need one from a magneto ignition JD or an after market switch for magneto ignition systems. If you change the switches you may need the wires around. If you bought a kit to do this they should of told/provided you with a relay to use the original switch. If they didn't I would call them and ask what you need to do. Roger

Brad J.. try JD's medium gloss black. It has just the right amount of shine. Not too glossy, not too flat, easy to touch up.

I have no use for it and it would just take up space but I want that Brantly hoe attachment for my 400 anyway.

Please please please someone point me in the right direction. I am very new to the forum and I have seen some INCREDIBLE restored 140's my problem is I live in Vancouver B.C Canada and I want to restore the following 1973 140 H3 it has the original motor, 54 inch front blade, 48 inch deck, 33 tiller, 50 cart and front and back wheel weight. When I say restore I mean take it all apart and repainted. It is a very solid tractor but I cant find anyone up here to do it. I dont feel comfortable doing it myself. By some chance would any of you know where I could get this done around my area? From my understanding there are VERY few of these up here in Canada the reason I want her back to showroom condition is that my Dad bought it new. If any of you may be able to help me out that would be great Thank you. Brad

Mike Duwe,
Those Brantly Hoe and bucket don't really look like my 400w/ a 420A setup. I wonder if that's the smaller 320Brantly loader w/ a LD hoe meant for the 300. I can't really tell from the pic. David

Keith generally speaking the longer armed of the two front draft plates is the one you would need. If you need a measurement let me know I can dig them out of the barn. Its to hot to do if someone else knows the numbers/lengths off the top of their head. Roger

Hi All -

Only 27 more tractors until the Registry passes the 12,000 mark!

We should easily pass the 12,000 mark by the end of this month (August).

-Chris

P.S. I'm still queing all of the Registry update requests/update until the technical problem is corrected. Please keep sending those emails.

If you have a question that doesn't need a database update, you should receive an answer in in 24/48 hours.

Brad Blitz Black is what JD used and it is not supposed to be glossy if that is what you do not like. The tanks where not glossy from the factory. If that is the problem just paint it the gloss black. Roger

Jim B,
Your 400 w/ Brantly can be very useful and fun to use. Did you get an operator's and installation manual w/ it? It should be a model 420A. I could have copies made of my orig ones from '77 when I assembled my Brantly when new. You're going to need quite a bit of front wt to offset the backhoe while digging. David

Welcome to the forum....finally. That is a pretty good looking 210 and good that you kept it.

Heed Shannon's warning though...sounds like the green virus is starting to spread through your system.

Jim,
how is the backhoe attached to the tractor? I'm guessing one bolts on a sub-frame and then connects the backhoe to that with pins? If so, how far forward does the sub-frame reach on the tractor? How big of a pump does it use, and do you think that the pump is adequately sized? Asking because I'm thinking of fabbing up one myself.
Cheers,
Neil.

Even though this is my first post I've been getting information from this forum for a very early 1975 210 that I picked up about a year ago.

It wasn't running and the previous owner had made a mess of the wiring while he was trying to troubleshoot the problem. The lights came on when the key switch was turned to "start", so I bought the tractor, mower deck and a snowblower for $150, not knowing if it ran.

After cleaning up the wiring I found that the circuit breaker was bad-when I jumped across it the motor turned over. A quick trip to my JD dealer and it fired up later that day. So far it seems to run great with just a little smoke on start up. Over all it's surprisingly clean and straight. The previous owner said it had never been painted, and I don't see any signs that it has, so "if" its the original paint it's surprisingly clean and in great shape. There's no rust anywhere.

I sold the snowblower for $125 last fall and tucked the 210 away figuring I'd sell it in the spring. Somehow, over the winter it sort of grew on me and I decided not to sell it. I gave it a complete tune up and rebuilt the carb.

Saturday I picked up a model 43 snow blade, along with a set of chains. I paid $50 for the blade and $20 for the chains (the middle of the summer is a bad time to sell a snow blade).

I'm now using the 210 around the property, it pulls my trailer and sprayer. This winter I'll use it to plow the areas of the drive that are too tight for my big tractor (Ford N). I'm surprised at how much fun it is, and I'm surprise at how it sort of grew on me.

I wanted to thank this forum-I've gotten a lot of information from the posts and archives.
